Unbelievable that it has been already over 12 years since this crash... While I didn't follow Indycar actively at the time, I definitely remember all the news and watching the youtube video where it shows this crash + the parade laps that the drivers did after knowing that Dan had died. It was a shock. This definitely killed pack racing for good in Indycar. While we might have races like the 2023 Texas race, we won't be having IRL style races anymore, at least not throughout the season.

I remember watching it live. To this day I can still vividly recall them playing Amazing Grace on the PA system after Dan Wheldon died.

I think Atlana 2001 looked worse and they continued the race. I wish this type of racing returns, I would more prefer 2001 Texas style racing, which wasn't like this pack racing. With aeroscreens no worries about the danger. Just go faster!

Watched this live on television,and KNEW IT WAS BAD.As a guy who drove stock cars at a couple of short tracks ,I know it's a chance you take.But seeing Dan Wheldon's accident,there didn't seem to be ANYWAY THAT HE COULD COME OUT ALIVE,and unfortunately he didn't. RIP DAN WHELDON,RIP

These guys know the risk .I think these type of cars are more dangerous most of the time if you become airborne your gone .I drove a rig got seriously injured I got crushed But I knew the the risk life is crazy my best friend ! me and him hauled sections of Submarine Decking and all sorts of stuff .He was one of best drivers I've ever seen . I get injured and he gets killed that's crazy .lol

Maybe one of the worst regarding the numbers of cars involved and Weldon's death, but the 1964 Indy 500 fiery crash started by Dave McDonald also killing Eddie Sachs is worse, 2 drivers died that day and many cars were taken out, the fire was also one of the most intense in Indy car history, still they were stupid to run that many cars at those speeds on such a small track...

I will never forget seeing this. As much as it was tragic, it was a miracle only The Great Dan Wheldon was taken from us. 🙏 RIP.

That race was absolutely a mistake, it was just a race for money, no points. As a photographer who spent many years shooting Indycar racing even before the split and after, not only a job but passion, Indycars on the banked tracks always bothered me, I was in Texas for the CART race when drivers started complaining about tunnel vision,thank God race was canceled. I was nearby when Scott Brayton died and a other photographer was trying to get closer to get a shot, have some respect. Greg Moore was the hardest for me, I had spent time with him at Mid Ohio and was such a incredible young talent. What other sport does a athlete compete in where they risk there lives every time they get in the car or throw a leg over a motorcycle. MotoGP bikes have top speeds of 225 + and the first time I saw a bike going as fast as a Indycar at Indianapolis I was shocked.

Go watch Swede Savage's 1973 fatal accident. You can see him struggling, in vain, to get out of the car. A heartbreaker. That was AT the Indy 500; this crash was at the Vegas Speedway.

I saw this race live on T.V. and remember thinking that even on a hot western day that these cars seemed like they were traveling very closely at excessive speeds that almost seemed out of control when they showed it from drivers' perspectives. It felt like something bad was going to happen because of this.

I worked that race. I was heartbroken about this. Dan kept coming thru my gate several times and we talked a lot. Lost a friend that day. Great guy. Miss you Dan!
